Practical summary

If you don't use any subscription feature :

• All your data is stored locally (in Documents/life-journal/ for the PC version and in the app internal folder for mobile versions)
• The app will work exactly the same without any internet connection
• Your data will never be sent to our data servers
• Your internet connection may only be used to download an update for the app (PC only)

If you use subscription features for your personal use :

• Obviously for the sync service to work (which you have to manually set up), data will be sent to our data servers
• But all the note data that is sent is completely unreadable outside your devices. How is that ?
• Before sending any of your notes to the data server, the content of your notes is encrypted on your device first, using an encryption password that only you have access. This means three things :
  • 1 / the content stored on the server is in itself unreadable.
  • 2 / only you can read this data, as you are the only one to have the encryption password (end-to-end encryption / E2EE).
  • 3 / there is an inherent drawback to this security system that is linked to its quality : if you lose your encryption password, and that you don't have an existing LifeJournal installation synced to the cloud database, then there is no way to read the content that is in the cloud database. So don't lose your password !

The aforementioned point relates to notes data, or more generally LifeJournal internal data. This basically includes everything that you wrote in LifeJournal (so it also includes nodes, LifeTracker values, ...).

But it doesn't apply the same to all external files (such as images, videos, ...) that you linked in your notes. Here's how it works for external files :

• All external files are encrypted in transit and at rest.
• But currently, only small external files are encoded before transit (end-to-end encrypted), like notes are.
• Small files are files which are smaller than 10 MB.
• Big files names are still encrypted before transit, only their content is not

You can completely delete any or all of your subscription data at any moment, in your membership section

Also if your subscription expires or if you cancel it, your data will be preserved for one month. If you are still not subscribed again one month from the end of your subscription, then your data will be automatically deleted. Of course if you choose to delete your data yourself, it won't be preserved at all.

About communities bases :

• The overall rules are the same as those for personal bases, data is never sent in clear.
• Users can only access your community base if you invited them and if you give them the encryption password for this base
• As of now, all content within a community base is encrypted using the same key.
  • This means that if your content is sensitive, be careful who you invite and give the encryption password to.
  • In case of emergency, you will still be able to change the encryption password, and thus lock out all users that don't have this new password
• Each user of a community base will only be able to import and export what he is allowed to within the community.
  • So for example if there is a private chat between person A and B, only person A and B will be able to import / export the data from this chat.

For a better experience while using our Service (suscriptions features only), we may require you to provide us with certain personally identifiable information, including but not limited to your email address. The information that we request will be retained by us and used as described in this privacy policy.

Log Data

We want to inform you that whenever you use our Service, in case of an error in the app we might collect data and information on your device called Log Data. This Log Data may include information such as your devices’s Internet Protocol (“IP”) address, device name, operating system version, configuration of the app when utilising our Service, the time and date of your use of the Service, and other statistics.

As of now, we do not collect any Log Data. This is subject to change in the future, but you will be noticed, and it will not change automatically without your consent

Cookies

Cookies are files with small amount of data that is commonly used an anonymous unique identifier. These are sent to your browser from the website that you visit and are stored on your devices’s internal memory.

This Service does not uses these “cookies” explicitly. However, the app may use third party code and libraries that use “cookies” to collection information and to improve their services. You have the option to either accept or refuse these cookies, and know when a cookie is being sent to your device. If you choose to refuse our cookies, you may not be able to use some portions of this Service.

We does not disclose personal information to any organization or person for any reason except the following:

Services to fulfill orders, process credit card payments. They have access to personal information needed to perform their functions, but may not use it for other purposes.

We value your trust in providing us your Personal Information, thus we are striving to use various means of protecting it.

But remember that no method of transmission over the internet, or method of electronic storage is 100% secure and reliable, and we cannot guarantee its absolute security.

This Services do not address anyone under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal identifiable information from children under 13. In the case we discover that a child under 13 has provided us with personal information, we immediately delete this from our servers. If you are a parent or guardian and you are aware that your child has provided us with personal information, please contact us so that we will be able to do necessary actions.

We may update our Privacy Policy from time to time. Thus, you are advised to review this page periodically for any changes. We will notify you of any changes by posting the new Privacy Policy on this page. These changes are effective immediately, after they are posted on this page.
